Forged by hand, guided by instinct. Her work begins where material resists.
Prisca Razafindrakoto (*1994) is an artist based in Villejuif (FR).
Situated at the intersection of design and sculpture, her practice is rooted in the workshop, in direct physical engagement with metal. She fabricates her pieces herself, bending, compressing and constraining the material until it reaches a point of tension between control and release.
Trained in applied arts, she chose to place making at the center of her research. Form does not illustrate a pre-existing idea ; it emerges from negotiation with the material - from what it allows and what it resists.
Her Franco-Malagasy heritage subtly informs her sensibility : in rhythm, colors, repetition, density of surface. Not as quotation, but as structural memory.
COLOR AND PATTERN
In her work, material is never a neutral support. Color and pattern are generated within the metal itself.
Hues emerge through heat treatment and oxidation - oranges, browns, blues, iridescent reflections. Color is not applied ; it is revealed. It results from process, not decoration.
Similarly, pattern arises directly from fabrication : through weld lines, zones of tension, perforations, controlled deformations, repeated gestures. Mechanical constraints and physical force inscribe the surface.
Each piece becomes a cartography of the forces that shaped it.
MATERIAL AS A FIELD OF FORCES
Sheet metal deforms under pressure. A tube becomes a continuous line. Constraint becomes language.
Each collection is built around a clear constructive principle, pushed to its point of intensity. The structure remains legible. The surface retains the memory of its making.
Metal - often perceived as cold or industrial - is here activated into something vibrant, almost organic.
BETWEEN OBJECT AND PRESENCE
Her pieces deliberately oscillate between function and sculpture. A chair may appear suspended. A tubular structure becomes a drawing in space.
She works with an economy of means : a sheet, a tube, a tension. This formal restraint produces a strong physical presence - objects that engage the body as much as the eye.
A COLLECTOR PRACTICE
Through series such as UNDERPRESSURE and ENDLESS TUBE, Prisca Razafindrakoto transforms industrial processes into contemporary spatial language.
Each piece - unique or in limited edition - is produced in her workshop, with close attention to fabrication and detail. The gesture remains visible. Uncertainty is embraced as part of the form.
Her work speaks to those who perceive in an object more than function : a contained force, a material memory, a pattern that could only emerge from that precise moment of tension.
